12 m² Rugs (Extra-Large Size)

The ideal size to cover an area of around 25 square meters is 12 square meters. Also, especially if you plan to place your furniture on top of your rug, as preferred in recent global decoration trends, 12 square meter rugs are an excellent choice. They are also suitable for dining tables seating 10-12 people.

      A 12 square meter rug is the largest standard size, woven at a nominal 300 x 400 cm (9'10" x 13'1") — exactly 12.00 m². Hand-knotted pieces in the band run from 299 x 429 cm to 312 x 437 cm, or 11.9 to 13.6 m², within a hand's width of an American 10 x 14.

This is the size at which a rug stops decorating a room and starts defining it. What follows is the real range of measurements, the floor each one needs, and what changes about buying, moving and cleaning a rug this large.

What sizes actually land in the 12 m² band?

One standard size and a spread of one-off weavings around it.

      • 300 x 390 cm (9'10" x 12'9") — 11.7 m²
      • 300 x 400 cm (9'10" x 13'1") — 12.0 m², the nominal size
      • 299 x 429 cm (9'10" x 14'1") — 12.8 m²
      • 303 x 416 cm (9'11" x 13'8") — 12.6 m²
      • 308 x 418 cm (10'1" x 13'9") — 12.9 m²
      • 308 x 420 cm (10'1" x 13'9") — 12.9 m²
      • 305 x 427 cm (10'0" x 14'0") — 13.0 m²
      • 312 x 437 cm (10'3" x 14'4") — 13.6 m²

The pattern is easy to read once you know what to look for. Machine-woven and loom-woven rugs come in the flat 300 x 400; every measurement with a stray centimeter in it is a hand-knotted piece woven as a single object on a single loom. Each rug's measured size appears on its own page.

How much floor does 12 m² need?

      About 4.4 x 5.4 m.

A 300 x 400 cm rug with 70 cm of bare floor at every wall needs a room 440 x 540 cm. Drop the border to 40 cm and 380 x 480 cm will do, but below that the rug begins to behave like fitted carpet — the eye reads the strip of floor at the edge, and when there is none, the room loses its outline. In an open plan the walls stop mattering and the seating group becomes the boundary instead; a rug this size is usually there to draw one.

      Where the furniture goes

At 12 m² the arrangements that were tight one band down become comfortable.

      • An L-shaped sectional, all legs on. A 300 x 400 cm rug takes the full footprint of most sectionals with the feet standing on pile rather than straddling the edge, which is the single arrangement that most reliably makes a large room look deliberate.
      • A dining table for ten. Allow 75 cm behind every edge for chairs to pull back onto the rug, and 300 x 400 cm carries a table up to 150 x 250 cm — four a side and one at each end.
      • A king bed with room to walk. A 180 x 200 cm bed centered leaves 60 cm at each side and roughly 200 cm at the foot — enough for a bench, and enough that you land on wool rather than floorboards in the morning.
      • A meeting room. Under a long table the rug does the same geometric job and one acoustic one, taking the hard edge off footfall in a room that is usually short of soft surfaces.

What changes about the weaving at this width

The loom has to be wider than the rug, and that is the constraint everything else follows from.

A hand-knotted rug 300 cm across needs a loom beam longer than 300 cm and two or three weavers sitting side by side on the same bench, working the same row. That is why the sizes are irregular and why each piece exists once. Loom-woven and machine-woven rugs reach 300 x 400 cm as a catalog size, repeat exactly, and can be reordered for a second room. Pattern scale matters more here than at any smaller size: a fine, closely drawn design loses its reading across four meters, while an open field with a wide border holds together from the doorway.

Look at hand-knotted rugs for the one-off pieces and machine-woven rugs for the repeatable sizes.

Living with a rug this heavy

A hand-knotted wool rug at 12 m² is a two-person object. Roll it pile-side out around a tube rather than folding it, since a fold in a wool pile leaves a crease that takes weeks to settle. Rotate it twice a year so that the traffic lane and the sunlit corner move. Vacuum with the beater bar off, lift the furniture rather than working around it, and keep the rug out of a full south window, which fades madder faster than feet wear it. Washing at this size is a job for a plant with a floor big enough to lay it flat — see how a rug is washed.

      Frequently asked questions

What size is a 12 square meter rug in centimeters?

The nominal size is 300 x 400 cm, which is exactly 12.00 m². Hand-knotted pieces in the band measure anywhere from 299 x 429 cm to 312 x 437 cm, so the real area runs from about 11.9 to 13.6 m².

How many square feet is a 12 m² rug?

About 129 square feet at 300 x 400 cm, and up to 147 square feet at the top of the band. A 305 x 427 cm hand-knotted rug is within a few centimeters of an American 10 x 14 foot rug.

How big a room does a 12 m² rug need?

About 4.4 x 5.4 m, if 70 cm of bare floor is to show at every wall. In a room much under 4 m wide, a 300 cm rug leaves so little floor at the sides that it stops reading as a rug at all.

Will a king bed sit properly on a 12 m² rug?

Yes. A 180 x 200 cm bed centered on 300 x 400 cm leaves 60 cm of pile at each side and about 200 cm at the foot, which is enough to step onto barefoot and to carry a bench across the end.

How many people can a 12 m² rug seat at a dining table?

Ten. At 75 cm of chair clearance behind every edge, a 300 x 400 cm rug carries a table up to 150 x 250 cm, which is four chairs down each side and one at each end with every leg still on the pile.

Why do hand-knotted rugs at this size come in odd measurements?

Each one is woven as a single piece on its own loom, and warp tension decides the finished width. Sizes such as 308 x 420 cm or 303 x 416 cm are what came off the loom, not a size the workshop was aiming for.

Is a 12 m² rug hard to move and clean?

It is heavy, and a hand-knotted wool piece at this size takes two people to roll and carry. Vacuuming is ordinary work; washing is not, and a rug this large goes to a professional plant rather than into a bath.
