Wool fiber carries its own natural oil, lanolin; dust and dirt sit on the surface instead of entering the fiber. That is why a vacuum does so much.
Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
No drawing at all, and a cream that is not white
A cream flatweave with no pattern on it hides nothing, and that ought to be said before anything else about it. Plain Cream Loom-Woven Wool Kilim, Bohem Series — wool over a cotton warp, made in Türkiye, pileless and the same on both faces, at 195 × 305 cm (6'5" × 10'0"). What it offers in exchange is a floor that behaves like a wall — an even, matte, undrawn surface that lets everything standing on it be seen properly.
Cream wool is not white and does not attempt to be: it carries a faint yellow that keeps the room from going clinical, and it changes value across the day far more than a patterned rug would, warming in the late afternoon and going almost gray under an overcast sky.
At just under six square meters it takes a sofa, a low table and a chair without any of them crowding it. A loom lays down the body and hands close the ends. That arrangement makes a loom-woven kilim steadier than a machine one and a good deal quicker to produce than anything knotted.
Wool carries the surface and cotton the warp. With no pile there is nothing for anything to sink into, and that cuts both ways: there is a moment to lift a spill before it reaches the wool, while a mark that does get in has nowhere to hide.
Professional cleaning, and put a pad under it. Woven on a loom in Türkiye, with the ends closed by hand. A wool face carried on cotton, with no pile at all. Plain cream, undrawn, with a faint yellow in the wool rather than a true white. 195 × 305 cm (6'5" × 10'0") — a full seating group fits on it. Changes value through the day more than a patterned rug does. Nothing sinks in, and nothing is hidden either; it is a pale floor. A pad underneath keeps a light flatweave from traveling. Professional cleaning.
A single piece. Pale floors are a decision about how a room is going to be lived in, and this one asks the question straight away.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
