Wool is naturally hard to ignite; an ember landing on it goes out by itself without catching flame. That is why wool is chosen in front of a fireplace.
Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is purple.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Purple is not a kilim color, and this one is purple
Every one of these is woven by a different pair of hands: Studio Potato commissions women weaving at home across Türkiye, which makes Flow a design rather than a product. Dark Purple Abstract Handwoven Wool Kilim, 120 × 170 cm (3'11" × 5'7"), all wool, worked flat at the loom.
The one that arrives will not match the photograph exactly. Flow is drawn as an abstract rather than as a motif, and dark purple is an unusual color to give a kilim — the tradition runs to reds, indigos and undyed wool, and purple sits outside all three.
On a floor it behaves like a dark neutral: beside pale oak or a limewashed wall it reads almost black until the light catches the weft and the color comes up. Two square meters is a small piece, so it belongs at the side of a bed or under a chair rather than at the center of a room. Flat-woven in wool with no pile, so both faces are usable and the whole thing rolls up small enough to carry under one arm.
The studio commissions rather than manufactures, and the households doing the weaving are spread across the country, which is the reason for the variation the maker declares up front — color placement, exact dimensions and the density of the beat all shift from weaver to weaver. Anyone wanting two the same is looking at the wrong object. Shake it out of doors between times, and send it to a kilim cleaner for anything more. Handwoven flat in wool at the loom, in Türkiye. Commissioned by Studio Potato from women weaving at home across the country. Dark purple, drawn as an abstract rather than a traditional motif. 120 × 170 cm (3'11" × 5'7"), about two square meters. No pile: reversible, light, and easy to roll and move. Color placement and exact size vary piece to piece; yours will differ from the photograph. Shake it out of doors; a kilim cleaner for anything beyond that. A kilim this size is usually somebody's first, and it is the one they still have after the big rugs have been replaced twice.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
