02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool yarn

On the surface: Wool, Cotton. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.

02

Traditional pattern layout

Traditional, Tribal pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is burgundy, red.

03

Afghanistan work

This rug is woven in Afghanistan. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.

Burgundy Afghan Hand-Knotted Wool Khamyap Rug — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

In Afghanistan the Turkmen tribes have been knotting this drawing for generations, and the Khamyap weavings keep it in production: Burgundy Afghan Hand-Knotted Wool Khamyap Rug, 253 × 350 cm (8'4" × 11'6"), burgundy and navy, a wool surface laid over cotton.

01Reading the motif

One piece. The motif family comes out of Bukhara and Herat, and the field is colored so densely that from a distance the pattern reads as texture rather than as drawing. Burgundy and navy together give the rug warmth and weight at the same time.

02From the hand of the weaver

Because the weavers carry the design in their heads instead of copying a cartoon, no two Khamyap rugs are identical, and small departures from row to row are the ordinary condition of the piece rather than a fault in it. Wool covers the entire surface.

03The Cotton on the surface

Beneath it, cotton forms the structure and carries between 5% and 10% recycled synthetic yarn, added for strength and stated here plainly. In knot density Khamyap sits in the middle of the house's Afghan weavings, below Hoca Roşnai and Bilicik, which is what makes it the accessible way into a hand-knotted Turkmen rug at this scale.

04Where it is laid

It settles well against wood, gray, silver and white. Professional washing when the time comes. Hand-knotted by Turkmen weavers in Afghanistan, by traditional method. Wool pile; cotton foundation with 5–10% recycled synthetic yarn for durability. Bukhara and Herat motifs, carried in the weaver's memory. Medium knot density — below Hoca Roşnai and Bilicik in the house's own ranking. Burgundy and navy, which sit with wood, gray, silver and pale walls. 253 × 350 cm (8'4" × 11'6") — a large salon, edge to edge. Small differences between rugs are inherent to the method. Professional washing, at long intervals. What is a Khamyap rug? Khamyap is a class of hand-knotted rug woven by Turkmen weavers in Afghanistan, using motifs associated with Bukhara and Herat.

05The mark of slow weaving

It sits at a medium knot density, below the finer Hoca Roşnai and Bilicik weavings, which makes it the most hard-wearing of the three for the labor it takes. Why do two Khamyap rugs never match exactly? Because the weavers hold the design in memory instead of copying a paper cartoon. Each motif is placed by hand as the rug rises on the loom, so proportions shift slightly from row to row and from piece to piece.

06Up close to the pattern

The variation is a property of the method rather than a defect. A rug this size outlasts the room it was bought for, which is the argument for choosing the pattern you would still want in another house.

07

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.
