On the surface: Wool, Viscose. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Traditional pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is white, cream.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Frames closing inward on cream, viscose spun through the wool
Cream at this size records everything that happens on it, and that is the first thing to say: a hand-knotted Pakistani rug, 172 × 229 cm (5'8" × 7'6"), wool blended with viscose, its classical motifs gathered at the middle and closed in by a run of drawn frames. A single piece. The frames are the structure: one inside another, each narrower than the last, working inward until the field arrives.
Nothing in the drawing sits deep — the motifs are worked shallow, closer to a watermark than to an ornament — and light does most of the work in showing them. Barefoot, the viscose in the yarn is smoother than the wool around it, and that difference registers on skin sooner than it does on the eye. Pakistan has kept hand-knotting as a working trade rather than a revival, and this is an ordinary product of that trade in the best sense: knotted, not tufted, on a loom, by a person.
Body comes from the wool and shine from the viscose, and the shine moves as you cross the room rather than sitting still. Because the ground is pale and the pattern is shallow, a hallway that takes outdoor shoes will age this rug quickly, and a bedroom will not.
It should be washed by a workshop and vacuumed at home. Hand-knotted in Pakistan from wool blended with viscose. Concentric drawn frames closing on a cream field of classical motifs. The motifs are worked shallow — visible by light rather than by depth. 172 × 229 cm (5'8" × 7'6"). Viscose adds a low sheen and a smoother hand than wool alone. A pale ground: it will show a hallway's traffic faster than a bedroom's. Professional washing; regular vacuuming in between. One piece. Left where shoes come off rather than where they come in, it will outlast the room it was bought for.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
