On the surface: Wool, Viscose. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Traditional pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is white, cream, taupe.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

A pale rug in a busy room is a decision worth making deliberately: Cream Floral Hand-Knotted Wool and Viscose Rug — 172 × 231 cm (5'8" × 7'7"), knotted by hand in Pakistan, wool with viscose blended through the pile, its small flower motifs raised just enough across the cream ground to be felt underfoot. One piece. The relief is the thing here.
The flowers sit slightly proud of the field, so the pattern registers through the sole of a bare foot before it registers in the eye, and the cream shifts by half a tone wherever the pile stands higher. Nothing in the drawing is loud.
It is the kind of surface that makes a bedroom quieter and a hallway warmer, and the reason to walk on it barefoot rather than to admire it from a doorway. Wool takes the wear and viscose takes the light.
Blended in a knotted pile they give a surface that is soft without going flat and bright without going shiny, and the two fibers wear at slightly different rates, which is what produces the low sheen over time rather than a shine from the start.
It came off Pakistani looms, knotted row by row. A rug this pale will show what is spilled on it and carries no treatment to change that; professional washing, promptly, is the answer. There is one at this size. Pakistani hand knotting, in a wool pile carrying viscose. Small flower motifs raised above a cream ground. The pattern is felt underfoot before it is seen. 172 × 231 cm, which suits a bedroom or a wide hallway. Wool for wear, viscose for the light in the pile. Untreated and pale; spills should go out for professional washing quickly. A single piece at these dimensions. Take your shoes off on it once and the argument for a pale rug in a hallway makes itself.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
