01What Wool does

Wool and cotton yarns over a cotton foundation, with bamboo viscose used for the motifs alone. Knotted in India for Halıcızade, in several sizes including a runner. Damask is drawn symmetrically by definition, and on a brown ground that symmetry stops the rug from looking busy at any distance.

02The origin of the pattern

The motifs repeat across the field at a size you read from standing height, not from the doorway. Where the bamboo viscose sits, the surface throws light back; where the wool sits, it absorbs it. That is the whole of the pattern's behavior, and it is enough.

03The tone of the ground

Against pale oak, cream and beige the rug settles down; against black, navy or charcoal it does the opposite and becomes the strongest thing in the room. The knot count is high and the whole surface is worked by hand.

04From ground to pile

Two facts are worth separating: the foundation is cotton, and the pile is a wool-and-cotton blend with bamboo viscose reserved for the figures — bamboo viscose being the fiber some sellers call bamboo silk, which this house does not.

Brown hides a great deal, and that is a practical argument as much as a decorative one. Send it out for washing; nothing at home will reach the base of a pile this dense.
