Burgundy silk, the old Anatolian figures set further apart

On the surface: Silk, Natural. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Classic pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is burgundy, red.
This rug is woven in China. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Burgundy silk, the old Anatolian figures set further apart
Sixty-four knots to the square centimeter, all of them silk. The piece is a hand-knotted pure silk rug, 104 × 168 cm (3'5" × 5'6"), woven in China in burgundy, with classic Anatolian motifs redrawn to a modern spacing. Eight by eight is how the weavers count it.
One piece; there will not be a second. Burgundy at this density does something a printed color cannot. Silk takes the dye deep and then returns the light unevenly, so the ground moves between dark wine and a lit red as you walk past it, and the Anatolian figures — the hooks, the stepped edges, the small hexagons — surface and recede along with it.
Where a village piece would crowd the field, this one leaves air around each figure, which is why it reads as modern without disowning what it borrowed. China has been reeling and weaving silk for a very long time, and this is the workshop end of that tradition: tied knot over knot, dense enough that every edge in the drawing stays sharp at arm's length.
Small silk rugs are often hung rather than laid, and the surface here carries light well enough to hold a wall. On the floor it wants a corner that nobody crosses in shoes. Silk is the least forgiving fiber in the house, and it should be washed by a specialist and by no one else. Hand-knotted in China in pure silk, surface and foundation alike. Eight by eight — sixty-four knots in every square centimeter. Classic Anatolian and authentic motifs, set at modern intervals. The burgundy shifts between wine and lit red with the angle of the light. 104 × 168 cm (3'5" × 5'6"), which suits a study, a bedside, a small entryway or a wall. Professional washing only; silk does not survive improvisation. A single piece. Hung, it is a picture.
Laid down, it is the smallest serious thing in the room.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
