Orange Mamluk-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Tempus Series

The Mamluk pattern is named for the Cairo workshops that wove it in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: stars set inside octagons, small leaves and flower heads packed around them, the whole thing held inside a running frame.

01What Wool does

Here it arrives in warm orange over cream, woven from wool and bamboo viscose over a cotton warp in the Aegean workshops of western Anatolia, at 160 × 230 cm, or 5'3" by 7'7", with a smaller and a larger size beside it. Orange is the difficult half of this rug and the reason to own it.

02Color, by the light

The lighter orange carries the geometry, the deeper one sits underneath and stops the pattern floating, and cream opens the spaces between so that a dense drawing still reads at walking speed. Mamluk work is radial rather than directional, which means the rug has no top and no bottom and can be turned end for end when one edge starts to wear.

03What the yarn is

Against oak, terracotta tile or an unpainted plaster wall the orange settles down; beside cold blue-gray it will argue, and it is fair to say so. Wool and bamboo viscose share the surface over a cotton warp: the wool gives the body and the bamboo viscose the small shine that comes up along the leaf shapes when the light is low.

04The mark of slow weaving

The body goes down on a mechanical loom and hands complete it afterwards, the compromise that puts the look of a knotted rug within reach without the year at the loom. The pile is middling in depth and packed tightly, so it gives off very little lint.

05How it feels underfoot

A tree of life is worked into the frame, small enough that most people never find it. Loom-woven in the Aegean region of Türkiye: machine structure, hand finishing. Wool and bamboo viscose in the surface, on a cotton warp. A Mamluk composition of stars, octagons, leaves and flowers in orange on cream. Radially drawn, so it can be turned end for end as it wears.
