Terracotta Mamluk-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Günyolu Series

Three medallions, each of them an octagon, set down a ground where terracotta and gray have been allowed to run into one another instead of being kept apart. Inside each octagon sits a dense arrangement of small geometric figures, and the risk with a ground this active is that they vanish into it.

01What the yarn is

They do not, because the fibers separate them: the medallions are lifted in Tencel®, the ground held down in wool. It was made for a room that wants a single thing to look at and does not want that thing to be a conventional classical drawing — eclectic and bohemian rooms in dark natural tones, or a wall painted an earth color. The making follows the rest of the series: machine knots, hand finishing, on the same looms that the other Günyolu designs come off.

02From ground to pile

Wool is the warm half of the surface and it feeds the depth of the terracotta; Tencel® is the bright half and it brings the medallions and the gray tones forward. Somewhere in each piece is the tree of life that says who commissioned it. Give it to a rug cleaner rather than washing it at home. Made on the same Kütahya and Oushak looms as the rest of the series. Wool and Tencel® worked over cotton. Three octagonal medallions on a merged terracotta and gray ground. Small geometric figures inside each medallion, held clear by the Tencel® shine. Suits eclectic and bohemian rooms and earth-colored walls. Carries the figure Halıcızade marks its own designs with. A rug cleaner, not a bucket. It is the loudest rug in a quiet series, and it will decide the color of a room rather than agree with one.
