Multicolor Floral Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Zade Series

The design is Bakhtiari, a floral repeat woven in western Iran for centuries, which Halıcızade came across while going through museum archives and had woven again in today's colors. It is a loom-woven rug in wool, cotton and Tencel®, burgundy, earth, green and beige, with one large flower at the center and a tree of life set into the outer frame.

01Choosing the size

Three sizes: 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10") for a full room, with 170 × 240 cm and 130 × 190 cm below it. Flowers sit at a steady rhythm across the field rather than massed, so the eye keeps moving and never settles on one quarter of the rug.

02After the color

Details appear and disappear as the hours change — the greens come forward in flat morning light, the burgundy takes over in the evening — and the surface behaves less like a fixed image than like something still going on.

03Up close to the pattern

The large central flower is the anchor, and everything else is arranged in relation to it. The tree of life in the border is the house mark: it is how you know the piece was woven for Halıcızade and not bought in from a mill. Wool, cotton and Tencel® yarns are worked together on looms in Kütahya.

04Knot by knot, by hand

The house does not describe this as hand-knotting and neither will we: a mechanical loom lays the structure down, and the hand work is confined to the finish. Each rug is sent to a house in the district, where a woman knots its fringes before it comes back.

05Where it is laid

The pile is kept low, which is why a rug with this much drawing on it still sits easily under furniture. At 200 × 300 cm it is a full-room piece, and other sizes can be woven to order. 06The mark of slow weaving

Halıcızade found this version in a museum archive and had it rewoven in a new palette, so the drawing is old and the colors are not. Is this rug hand-knotted? No, and the house says so plainly. It is loom-woven: the structure is laid down mechanically and the finishing, including every fringe, is done by hand in homes around Kütahya.
