This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Dry cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Twelve centimeters of old kilim, framed in stitched leather
Twelve centimeters across — about four and three-quarter inches — and every one of them different. Each coaster is cut from an old handwoven Anatolian kilim, in cotton and wool, and bound with a sewn leather edge.
Because the kilims come from different regions and different decades, no two coasters carry the same motif or the same colors. What you get is a fragment: part of a border, a corner of a diamond, a run of color that was once a meter of something larger.
The flat kilim weave is dense enough to take a hot cup without flinching and cold glass without darkening, and the leather frame around it is stitched rather than glued, which is what stops the woven edge unraveling the first time it is dropped. A non-slip backing keeps it on the table and off the finish underneath. The kilims themselves are the interesting part. These are pieces that had reached the end of their life as floor coverings and were cut down instead of thrown out, which is what the trade has always done with a rug too worn to walk on.
Because the stock is salvage, the supply is not a pattern the house can reorder — when a particular kilim is used up, that set of colors is finished. Dry clean; do not put it in water, which will pull the old dyes. Cut from old handwoven Anatolian kilims in cotton and wool. Bound with a stitched leather edge, not a glued one. 12 × 12 cm, with a non-slip backing. Each is unique: no two carry the same motif or color run. Takes hot and cold without marking the table beneath it. Made from salvaged kilim, so the color range shifts as the stock changes. Dry clean only; do not wash. What is the coaster actually made from? The center is a piece of old handwoven Anatolian kilim in cotton and wool, salvaged from a rug that had finished its life on the floor.
The outer frame is leather, stitched around the woven edge to stop it fraying. Will I receive the exact one in the photograph? Not necessarily. Every coaster is cut from a different kilim, so motifs and colors vary from piece to piece. The photograph shows the type and the construction rather than the individual coaster that will be sent. It is the smallest thing here, and the only one that began life as part of something much bigger.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
