No two stripes on it are the same width. Brown Striped Loom-Woven Wool Rug — brown ground crossed by uneven lines in cinnamon, yellow and red, made in India at 120 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11"), at 90 × 300 cm (2'11" × 9'10") and at 200 × 300 cm, six foot seven by nine foot ten. Regular stripes calm a floor down; irregular ones keep it awake, and this rug is deliberately on the second side of that line.

01The origin of the pattern

The lines wander in thickness and spacing, so the surface has movement in it without ever arriving at a pattern you could name. Brown carries the whole thing — the color of soil, more or less, and the reason the yellow and the red read as warm rather than as bright.

02The mark of slow weaving

There is a faint sheen across it, and it is worth knowing where that comes from: not from a finish, but from the bamboo viscose worked in among the wool. Loom-woven in India: the frame builds what you walk on, and a weaver does everything that shows at the edges.

03How it feels underfoot

Wool, bamboo viscose and cotton share the surface, giving a hand that is soft without going slack, and the pile is woven at the familiar mid-height that wears for years rather than seasons. The 90 × 300 cm size exists for corridors and is the one most people overlook. Professional washing; brown hides more than it should, which is not an excuse to leave it.
