Navy Plain Loom-Woven Wool Rug

The navy of deep water rather than of a uniform: a plain rug in 100% New Zealand wool, loom-woven in India, 13 mm pile at 4,750 g/m², matt and unpatterned. It is made in several sizes. Colors this dark usually arrive cold.

01What the yarn is

This one does not, because the surface is matt and wool absorbs light instead of bouncing it, so the navy reads as depth rather than as a block of paint. It behaves as a ground for whatever sits on it: a pale sofa gains an outline, timber warms up against it, brass and leather both hold their own.

02The mark of slow weaving

In a room where the walls are light it is the anchor, and in a dark room it disappears into the general depth, which is worth thinking about before choosing it for one. It comes off a loom in India where hand and machine share the same pass — the loom for the structure, a weaver for the knots.

03How it feels underfoot

The pile is New Zealand wool from end to end. Thick and dense, it gives underfoot rather than resisting, and the weight of it keeps it flat without an underlay. A natural fleece of this depth will shed a little in its first months; that is the wool showing its character, and it settles.
