Green Authentic-Pattern Loom-Woven Wool Rug, Urkum Series

At 60 × 90 cm (2'0" × 2'11") this is a small rug and the size is the point — a loom-woven Urkum Series rug in 100% wool, made in India, in a bright green carrying red, cream and blue figures that open across the field like flowers, finished with fringes dyed to match. It suits a doorway, a bedside or the foot of a chair. The green is a growing green rather than a bottle one, and on a pale floor it declares itself immediately.

01The origin of the pattern

The figures come from Gabbeh — a long-standing Anatolian and Middle Eastern way of weaving, in which pattern stays large, simple and sparse. Here that means a handful of standing shapes, well spaced, with nothing crowding them.

02Knot by knot, by hand

The colored fringe is a modern addition and reads as one. Loom-woven means the ground is built on the loom and the hand work is concentrated in the finishing; Urkum is made in India that way, which is why it ends up looking so much like a knotted piece.

03From ground to pile

The pile is 100% wool and packed thickly enough to give the piece the blunt, firm handle of a traditional rug. Given how much wool is in it, this is not a rug we would suggest to anyone with a respiratory sensitivity.
