Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is copper, terracotta.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Terracotta in 100% Tencel®, and it keeps every footmark
That is the first fact about this rug and it belongs at the top. Velvet Series Plain Terracotta Loom-Woven Rug — 100% Tencel®, loom-woven in Türkiye, 195 × 295 cm (6'5" × 9'8"), in a terracotta that turns matte or bright depending on where the light falls.
Some people read them as life in the surface; others find them a nuisance. Terracotta is an earth color and behaves like one — warm at midday, browner and deeper by lamplight. Set among cream, beige and ecru furniture it settles the room and holds the balance. Set against navy, olive or anthracite it stops being neutral and becomes the loudest thing on the floor.
No pattern gets in the way, so the whole field is available to whatever the light does to it through the day. Tencel® is a branded cellulose fiber spun by Lenzing from wood pulp, and in a pile it behaves rather like silk, which is where both the sheen and the footmarks come from.
The Velvet series is loom-woven in Türkiye: structure laid down on the loom, finishing done by hand. For a project, sizes can be made to measure. Professional washing. 100% Tencel® pile, loom-woven in Türkiye. 195 × 295 cm (6'5" × 9'8"); made to measure for projects. Terracotta reads matte from one angle and bright from another. Sits easily with cream and ecru; makes a hard contrast against navy or olive. Footmarks show and brush out again. Loom-woven: machine structure, hand finishing. Professional washing. What is Tencel®? It is a cellulose fiber that Lenzing spins from wood pulp and sells under that trademark.
In a rug pile it behaves much like silk — soft in the hand, and carrying a sheen that changes as the light or the viewer moves. It is manufactured rather than shorn. Why does this rug show footmarks? Because the fiber is smooth and reflective, the pile shows which way it has been pushed. Anywhere a foot has flattened it, the surface catches light differently and looks lighter or darker. Brushing the pile back in one direction clears it.
It is a property of the fiber, not a fault. A plain floor in a fiber that moves is a harder thing to get right than a pattern, and the trade for it is the marking.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
