01Up close to the pattern

No pile, no border, no medallion — stripes and the width they cross. One piece. Terracotta is a fired-clay color: warmer than brick, drier than orange, sitting between the reds and the browns without committing to either. Stripes do something specific to a room's proportions that a scattered pattern cannot.

02Which furniture, which room

Run them across the short axis and a narrow room widens; run them along the length and a long room is pulled longer still. At 219 cm across there is enough width for the bands to be read as bands rather than as texture, and that is what separates a kilim that organizes a floor from one that only covers it. 03What the yarn is

The wool takes the color and the cotton takes the strain — in a flatweave those are two separate jobs done by two yarns in the same cloth, and a piece that skips the cotton goes out of true at this width. That is a virtue under a dining table, where chairs have to slide, and a drawback beside a bed, where most people want something with depth to stand on first thing in the morning.
