Damask on black: shine from bamboo viscose, body from wool

On the surface: Natural, Wool. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is black.
This rug is woven in Nepal. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Damask on black: shine from bamboo viscose, body from wool
Wool for the body, bamboo viscose for the shine, cotton underneath: a hand-knotted damask rug made in India, 170 × 242 cm (5'7" × 7'11"), on a black ground. Damask is a figured weave named after Damascus, built on a scrolling repeat that has been used in silk since the middle ages and transfers to wool without losing its logic. What a black ground does to a damask is worth knowing before buying one. The repeat stops working as a picture and starts working as a texture, arriving where the light strikes and leaving where it does not, which means the rug is never quite the same twice as you move through a room.
That is roughly why damask ended up on wall silks and table linen rather than on anything meant to be seen from one fixed position. The division of labor between the fibers is the whole construction. Wool has the body and takes the wear; bamboo viscose has the luster and carries the figure; cotton makes the foundation the other two are worked onto.
One thing to expect from a rug this dark: pale lint and dust are exactly what show on black, so it will want the vacuum more often than its color suggests, not less. Blot a spill rather than rubbing at it; the wash is a specialist job. Made by hand-knotting in India, over a cotton foundation. Wool pile with bamboo viscose worked into the figure. Black ground; the damask repeat shows and hides with the angle of the light. Damask is a figured weave named for Damascus, drawn as a continuous scroll. 170 × 242 cm (5'7" × 7'11") — in front of a two- or three-seat sofa, or under a bed. Lint and pale dust are what a black rug shows; vacuum often. There are rooms that improve the moment the floor stops being the brightest thing in them.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
