On the surface: Wool. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Authentic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is gray, beige, colorful.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Birds and small animals among russet branches, on brown-mink wool
There are birds in it. Multicolor Floral Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Mihman Series — orange and russet branches spreading over a brown-mink ground, with birds, small animals, flowers and leaves scattered through them in blue, red, white and green.
Knotted wholly by hand in Afghanistan and in Pakistan, 275 × 360 cm (9'0" × 11'10"). One piece. The branching is what organizes it. Everything grows out of the boughs rather than sitting on the ground independently, so a field this crowded still has a direction to travel in. Nothing repeats exactly, which means the eye keeps finding something it has not already seen.
Multicolored fringes finish the ends and belong to the drawing rather than to the edge. With plain linen and cotton seating, cane or rattan furniture and botanical prints on the wall it makes immediate sense; a room that already has plants in it is where it belongs. About 2,000 knots go into every ten square centimeters.
That density is the signature of the series and the reason the small figures keep their outlines instead of blurring into color. Everything the hand meets is wool. Under it the base is cotton apart from a small share of recycled synthetic yarn, which is there to hold tension; the proportion is too slight to alter the character of the rug, and we mention it regardless. Months of patient work per piece.
At nearly ten square meters this rug sets the plan of the room, so measure before ordering. Vacuum regularly, and leave a deep clean to a professional. Made wholly by hand in Afghanistan and in Pakistan. About 2,000 knots per ten square centimeters — the density the series is known for. Wool pile; the base is cotton apart from a small share of recycled synthetic yarn. Branches in orange and russet over brown-mink, with birds, animals and flowers among them. Multicolored fringes at both ends. 275 × 360 cm (9'0" × 11'10") — a large sitting room or a reception hall. Months of weaving per piece. Vacuum regularly; a deep clean goes to a professional. How dense is the weave? About 2,000 knots are tied into every ten square centimeters, which is what the Mihman series is known for.
At that density the birds, flowers and small animals in the field keep clean outlines, and the rug holds its shape over decades rather than years. Is the whole rug wool? The pile is wool throughout, so everything underfoot is wool. Beneath it the base is cotton apart from a small share of recycled synthetic yarn, which holds tension. Those are two separate structures and we describe them separately. A field this full of living things is a strange thing to walk on, and after a week it is the reason nobody in the house looks at the walls.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
