The story of this rug

A prayer rug is sized to a person rather than to a room, and this one runs 80 × 130 cm — 2 feet 7 by 4 feet 3, enough for the forehead and the feet. Gray Loom-Woven Wool Prayer Rug, made in Türkiye in wool and cotton, the mihrab niche drawn in blue over gray with mustard along the edges. The mihrab is the pointed arch that tells the user which end faces the qibla, and it is the one element every prayer rug must carry.

01The geography of the weave

Here it is drawn in Anatolian outline and set against gray, which is not the traditional ground and is the whole reason the rug looks current. Blue fills the arch and the panels around it, mustard runs the borders, and the gray keeps the three colors from touching.

02Knot by knot, by hand
