3 m² Rugs (Bedroom and Small-Room Size)

Generally, rugs that are 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters long fall into this category. Additionally, runners for corridors can also be included in this group. They are laid beside beds in children's rooms, in front of the largest beds, and in areas with 7-10 square meters of free space.

A 3 square meter rug measures 150 × 200 cm (4'11" × 6'7"), covering exactly 3.00 m². It is the last size before a rug starts going underneath furniture. At 150 cm it matches a standard double bed, which is why it is bought most often for the foot of a bed and for rooms under 12 m².

This page sets out the dimensions that fall in the 3 square meter band in centimeters and in feet and inches, the arrangements the size can and cannot carry, and the single measurement that decides whether it will work in a sitting room.

What sizes land in the 3 square meter band?

150 × 200 cm is the standard, and the band runs from about 2.8 to 3.4 m². Two shapes sit inside it and they are not interchangeable.

              Size (cm)Feet and inchesActual areaProportion
              140 × 2004'7" × 6'7"2.80 m²1 : 1.43
              145 × 2004'9" × 6'7"2.90 m²1 : 1.38
              150 × 2004'11" × 6'7"3.00 m²1 : 1.33 — the standard
              160 × 1905'3" × 6'3"3.04 m²1 : 1.19
              170 × 2005'7" × 6'7"3.40 m²1 : 1.18
              180 × 1805'11" × 5'11"3.24 m²Square

The 1 : 1.33 proportion of the standard is the same as a double bed seen from above, and it is why the size drops so neatly across the foot of one. The near-square pieces at 160 × 190 and 180 × 180 cm do something different: they hold a single armchair and its footstool as a group. Hand-knotted rugs in this band arrive a few centimeters either side of the figures above, for the reasons set out in the rug size guide. Square pieces are gathered separately in square rugs.

Which room does a 3 square meter rug suit?

Rooms of about 9 to 12 m², and specific positions inside larger ones.

              • The foot of a double bed. Laid across the bed at 90 degrees, the 200 cm length overhangs a 150 or 160 cm frame by 20 to 25 cm on each side, so pile shows on both sides and at the foot. This is the arrangement the size was made for. More on placement in the bedroom rug guide.
              • A single bedroom or a child's room. Under a 90 cm bed with the rug running out into the floor, or free in the center of a room under 12 m². See baby and kids room rugs.
              • A study. A desk, a chair and the travel behind it, with the rug's edges reading as a border rather than disappearing under shelving.
              • An armchair corner in a larger room. A near-square piece under one chair, its front legs on the pile, the reading lamp off the rug.
              • A wide entrance hall. Where 120 × 180 cm looks apologetic against a long wall of cupboards.

The rule that matters at this size: measure the sofa, not the room

At every size above this one, the room decides. At 3 square meters the sofa decides, because the rug is not long enough to hide its own edges under anything.

Take the overall length of the sofa. If it is longer than the rug, the rug is beaten before it is unrolled: a 220 cm three-seater standing behind a 200 cm rug leaves pile visible for only part of its run, and the eye reads the mismatch immediately. The rug has to be at least as long as the sofa, and ideally 20 cm longer at each end. That puts a 150 × 200 cm rug in front of a two-seater of 160 cm or less, and nothing bigger.

The second half of the rule concerns depth. Set the rug 20 to 30 cm out from the front edge of the sofa so the front legs stand on bare floor, then check what is left in front of it. A coffee table 100 cm deep on a 150 cm rug leaves 25 cm at either end — enough to see, not enough to walk on. If you want the front legs of the seating on the pile instead, that is a 6 square meter job, not this one.

              Three square meters or four?

Four square meters means about 160 × 230 cm, and the extra 30 cm of length is what changes the arrangement from beside the furniture to under it.

Where the measurement falls between the two, take the larger. A small rug narrows a room; a large one collects it. Browse 4 square meter rugs before deciding.

What a 3 square meter rug is not

It is not a runner, whatever the proportions suggest at first glance. A runner is 80 to 100 cm wide and 200 to 600 cm long, made to follow a corridor with floor showing on both sides; at 150 cm wide this size fills a hallway to the skirting and curls against it. Corridors are served by hallway runners instead.

It is also not a dining rug. A table for four is about 80 × 120 cm, and every chair needs 50 to 60 cm behind it to be pulled out with its back legs still on the pile. That comes to a minimum of 180 × 240 cm before the table is even set, which is a 4 square meter piece at the smallest.

What to buy at this size

3 square meters is small enough that the weave is still affordable and large enough that the drawing is legible from standing height, which makes it the size at which most people buy their first hand-knotted rug.

A wool pile on a cotton warp is the durable choice, and a village pattern — a lantern medallion, a hooked border — reads well at this scale because it was drawn for pieces of about this size. Compare hand-knotted rugs and wool rugs. A flat-woven kilim at 150 × 200 cm is light enough to hang or to lift daily, and takes weeks on the loom where a knotted piece of the same size takes months, which is why it costs less. Machine-woven pile holds the exact dimension where a rug has to fit a measured alcove.

              Frequently Asked Questions

How many centimeters is a 3 square meter rug?

The trade standard is 150 × 200 cm, which is 4'11" × 6'7" and covers exactly 3.00 m². Pieces from 140 × 200 cm up to 170 × 200 cm are sold under the same name, and each product page carries its own measured size.

Is a 3 square meter rug a runner?

No. A runner is 80 to 100 cm wide and follows a corridor with floor showing on either side. At 150 cm wide a 3 square meter rug fills most hallways to the skirting and curls against the wall, so it belongs in a room rather than a passage.

What size bed does a 3 square meter rug suit?

A double of 150 or 160 cm, with the rug laid across the foot of the bed rather than under it. The 200 cm length overhangs the frame by 20 to 25 cm on each side, so pile shows on both sides and at the foot.

Will a 3 square meter rug work in a living room?

Only in a small one, and only in front of the seating rather than under it. The rug must be at least as long as the sofa; that limits it to a two-seater of about 160 cm. Rooms of 18 m² and up need 6 square meters.

Should I buy 3 square meters or 4?

Take 3 square meters for a room of 9 to 12 m² and 4 square meters for a room of 12 to 16 m². Four square meters is the smaller of the two sizes that will carry the front legs of a three-seat sofa.

Can a 3 square meter rug go under a dining table?

Not comfortably. A table for four measures about 80 × 120 cm and each chair needs 50 to 60 cm behind it to be pulled out with its back legs still on the pile, which sets a minimum of roughly 180 × 240 cm.

Why is a handwoven 3 square meter rug never exactly 150 by 200?

Because the loom sets the width and the weaver sets the pace. Warp tension, weft tension and months of work put a hand-knotted piece a few centimeters either side of its nominal size, and the finished measurement is printed on its own product page.
