Teen Room Rugs

The world is already tiring enough for young people, so let them mess up their loved ones, be comfortable in their rooms; they will probably either love their rugs so much that they take them along when they change rooms or homes over the years, or they will use them for a few years, get bored, and replace them.

A teen room rug is a floor covering for a bedroom that has stopped being a nursery and has not become a spare room. The rugs here are handwoven, loom-woven and machine-woven in wool, cotton, Tencel and viscose, drawn in plain fields, geometric grids and Anatolian shawl patterns, in sizes from 60 × 90 cm (2' × 3') to 300 × 400 cm (9'10" × 13'1").

Between about twelve and eighteen a bedroom changes function. It becomes a study, a place friends sit on the floor, and the one room in the house whose occupant has opinions about it. That changes what the rug has to do — and it changes who chooses it. What follows is what is on this page, how the sizes work against a bed and a desk, and what the care labels actually say.

What is in this collection

Sixty-five rugs, gathered from several series rather than woven as one line.

  • Focus Series — loom-woven wool in plain fields: anthracite, terra and green. No pattern at all, which is the point in a room where the walls are already doing something.
  • Zara Series — loom-woven Tencel and viscose, wool-free, in Anatolian and Scandinavian drawing, including round formats at 120, 160 and 200 cm.
  • Karnaval Series — loom-woven wool in the şal or shawl pattern, small and strongly colored, at 60 × 90 up to 197 × 279 cm.
  • Mermer and Fresco Series — machine-woven viscose in abstract and worn-vintage drawing, made in Türkiye at 100 reeds, in the widest size grid on the page.
  • Nika and Jura — handwoven plain-field rugs in wool, cotton and viscose, cream and beige, in a raised knitted-looking weave.
  • Hatıl Series — Halıcızade's own loom-woven wool, including a world-map field at 170 × 240 cm.

Two collections sit either side of this one: baby and kids' room rugs for a floor that is still played on, and bedroom rugs for an adult's.

Plain field, geometric or pattern?

It depends on what else is on the walls, and a teenager's walls are rarely empty. A plain rug is the safe structural choice under a room that already carries posters, a pinboard and a bookshelf; a patterned one works when the room is otherwise quiet and the rug is meant to be the thing you notice.

On color: a room decorated in warm reds, pinks and oranges takes a rug in a softer tone of the same family, and a room in dark colors takes a light rug rather than another dark one. Beyond that, the person who sleeps in the room should choose it. See geometric patterned rugs and plain color rugs for the two ends of that decision.

Wool, Tencel or viscose?

Wool for a floor that gets sat on, Tencel or viscose for a floor that gets looked at.

Wool pile compresses under a beanbag or a chair leg and then springs back, which is why the Focus and Karnaval rugs survive a room where the furniture moves every few months. It is also warmer underfoot in a room left unheated through the school day. Tencel and viscose are cellulose fibers with a smooth surface, so they throw light back and the color shifts as you cross the room — the Zara and Mermer rugs read lighter from the door than from the bed. That sheen is the reason to buy them and the reason they show a footpath sooner. Cotton sits between the two: matte, thin, cheap to replace, and the easiest to carry outside and shake.

Sizing against a bed and a desk

Measure the room and then measure the furniture, because a teen bedroom is usually a small floor with a large bed in it. Two arrangements cover most rooms.

  • Rug under the bed, extending past it. Set the rug so it runs from under the bottom two-thirds of the mattress out into the room, with 50–70 cm showing on the two long sides — you step onto rug rather than floor. In a room of 3 × 3.5 m that is roughly 160 × 230 or 200 × 290 cm (5'3" × 7'7" or 6'7" × 9'6").
  • Rug in the clear floor, bed off it. For a small room, put the rug where people actually sit — between the bed and the desk — at 120 × 180 or 140 × 200 cm (3'11" × 5'11" or 4'7" × 6'7"). A round rug at 160 or 200 cm does the same job and softens a room of hard corners.

One thing to check before ordering: a desk chair on castors. A castor rolls well on a low, flat weave and badly on a deep pile, and it will drag the edge of a small rug with it. Either put the chair fully on the rug or fully off it, never straddling the edge.

What the care labels say

Nearly every rug in this collection is tagged for professional washing. That is the honest headline, and it is worth knowing before a bottle of something goes over.

Day to day the routine is short. Vacuum without the beater bar; blot spills with a cloth rather than rubbing, since rubbing drives liquid down into the base of the pile where it sets; deal with a spill while it is still wet, which is the whole of the technique. No rug on this page is sold as resisting stains, and none is described that way here — what varies is how visible a mark is on a given surface. A dense mid-tone wool hides an accident better than a smooth cream viscose, and a flat weave lets you get at a spill sooner than a deep pile does, because there is less depth for it to go into.

If a floor genuinely needs to be washed at home rather than sent out, that is a different collection: see machine-washable rugs, where the maker states the rug can go in a domestic machine.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug fits a teenager's bedroom?

For a rug that runs under the bed, 160 × 230 or 200 × 290 cm suits a room of roughly 3 × 3.5 meters and leaves 50 to 70 cm showing at each long side. For a rug set in the clear floor instead, 120 × 180 or 140 × 200 cm is enough.

Should a teen room rug be plain or patterned?

Plain when the walls already carry posters, shelving and color, since the rug then works as structure. Patterned when the room is otherwise quiet and the rug is meant to be the thing that is noticed.

What are these rugs made of?

Wool, cotton, Tencel and viscose. The Focus, Karnaval and Hatıl series are wool; Zara is wool-free Tencel and viscose; Mermer and Fresco are machine-woven viscose made in Türkiye.

Can these rugs be washed at home?

Almost all of them are tagged for professional washing rather than home laundering. Day to day, vacuum without the beater bar and blot spills while they are still wet rather than rubbing them.

Which rug suits a desk chair on castors?

A low, flat weave, because a castor rolls over it instead of digging into it. Place the chair fully on the rug or fully off it, since a castor crossing the edge repeatedly will drag and fold it.

Do round rugs work in a small bedroom?

They do, at 160 or 200 cm, set in the clear floor between the bed and the desk. A circle breaks up a room made entirely of right angles and needs less floor than a rectangle of the same visual weight.

Should the teenager choose the rug?

Yes, at least the color and the pattern. It is the one room in a house whose occupant will look at the floor every day, and taste at that age is specific enough that a rug chosen for them tends to be moved within a year.
